Substantiiviryhmään refers to a noun phrase in Finnish grammar. A noun phrase consists of a head noun and any accompanying modifiers, such as adjectives, determiners, or other nouns. The head noun is the core of the phrase and determines its grammatical function in a sentence. Modifiers provide additional information about the head noun. For example, in the phrase "kaunis talo" (beautiful house), "talo" is the head noun and "kaunis" is an adjective modifying it. The entire phrase "kaunis talo" functions as a substantiiviryhmään.

Finnish noun phrases can vary in complexity. A simple substantiiviryhmään might contain only a noun, such as "koira" (dog). More complex ones can include multiple modifiers. For instance, "vanha punainen talo järven rannalla" (old red house by the lake) is a more elaborate substantiiviryhmään where "talo" is the head noun, modified by "vanha" and "punainen," and further specified by the prepositional phrase "järven rannalla." The grammatical case of the head noun and its modifiers must agree. Finnish has a rich case system, and noun phrases will reflect this agreement.
