Stråldosan refers to the amount of ionizing radiation absorbed by a material or organism. It is a crucial concept in radiation protection and nuclear physics, as it directly relates to the potential biological or material damage caused by radiation. The primary unit for measuring absorbed dose is the Gray (Gy), which is defined as one joule of energy absorbed per kilogram of material. Historically, the rad was used, with 1 Gy equivalent to 100 rad.

However, absorbed dose does not fully account for the biological effectiveness of different types of radiation. For this reason, the equivalent dose is introduced. Equivalent dose takes into account the type and energy of the radiation and its biological impact. The unit for equivalent dose is the Sievert (Sv). Different types of radiation, such as alpha particles, beta particles, and gamma rays, have different relative biological effectiveness (RBE) values, meaning they can cause varying degrees of damage for the same absorbed dose.

The effective dose is another related quantity that further refines the assessment of radiation risk. It considers both the equivalent dose to specific organs and tissues and the differing sensitivities of these organs to radiation. The unit for effective dose is also the Sievert (Sv). Understanding these different measures of radiation dose is essential for setting safety standards, managing radiation exposure in occupational settings, and evaluating the risks associated with medical imaging and radiation therapy.
