Storstrømsbroen

Storstrømsbroen is a road and rail bridge in Denmark, spanning the Grønsund strait between the islands of Falster and Masnedø. It is a significant piece of infrastructure connecting the Zealand and Falster landmasses, facilitating traffic flow on the European route E47. The bridge was constructed between 1935 and 1937, replacing an earlier ferry connection. It comprises a railway track on the upper deck and a road on the lower deck. The design features a distinctive arch, a common architectural style for bridges of its era.

The total length of Storstrømsbroen is 1,597 meters (5,239 feet), with its longest span being 135 meters (443 feet). The bridge has a clearance of 26 meters (85 feet) above sea level, allowing for maritime traffic to pass underneath. Over the years, Storstrømsbroen has undergone several maintenance and renovation projects to ensure its continued safety and functionality. Due to increasing traffic demands and the age of the structure, a new bridge, the New Storstrøm Bridge, is currently under construction adjacent to the old one. This new bridge is intended to take over the traffic load and is expected to be completed in the coming years. Once the new bridge is operational, the original Storstrømsbroen will be demolished.
