Storknunarhæfni, a term originating from Icelandic, translates to "clotting ability" or "coagulability" in English. It refers to the physiological process by which blood transforms from a liquid to a gel, forming a blood clot. This essential function prevents excessive bleeding after an injury to a blood vessel.

The process of storknunarhæfni involves a complex cascade of reactions involving various proteins called clotting factors, which are primarily synthesized in the liver. When a blood vessel is damaged, platelets, small blood cells, aggregate at the site of injury and form a temporary plug. Simultaneously, the clotting factors are activated in a sequence, ultimately leading to the conversion of a soluble protein called fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin.
