Standardschema is a conceptual, machine-readable schema for describing standards themselves. It aims to provide a formal model for metadata, relationships, and normative information that define a standard document or specification, with the goal of improving discovery, governance, and interoperability across standardization ecosystems.

The core model typically covers metadata such as title, identifier, issuing organization, version, publication date, and status (for example draft, active, or superseded). It also records the scope and intended audience, the normative references that the standard relies on, and any dependencies or relationships to other standards. Conformance criteria, usage rights, and implementation notes may be included to guide adopters. Relationships such as supersedes, is part of a family, or derives from other standards are captured to reflect lineage and dependency networks.

Representations are designed to be expressed in machine-readable formats such as RDF/JSON-LD, XML, or YAML, and to align with established metadata practices from sources like Dublin Core, schema.org, and SPDX. The schema supports linking to catalogs, registries, and repositories, enabling automated discovery, comparison, and compliance checks.

Adoption and governance of standardschema typically occur within a standards community or consortium. It is maintained by a working group, with formal versioning, change logs, and deprecation policies. Implementations are intended to be open, interoperable, and extensible, allowing standards bodies to publish metadata alongside their documents and enabling tooling for validation, search, and impact analysis.

Critics note that creating a universal standardschema can be complex given the diversity of standardization domains and legal requirements. Success relies on broad consensus, good tooling, and ongoing governance to prevent fragmentation and ensure data quality.
