Speichergerät, also known as a storage device, is a piece of computer hardware used to store digital data. These devices are essential for the operation of computers and other digital systems, allowing for the retention of information even when the power is turned off. Storage devices can be broadly categorized into primary and secondary storage. Primary storage, such as random-access memory (RAM), is volatile and used for actively running programs and data. Secondary storage, on the other hand, is non-volatile and used for long-term data retention.

Common types of secondary storage devices include hard disk drives (HDDs), solid-state drives (SSDs), USB flash drives, and optical media like CDs and DVDs. HDDs use spinning magnetic platters to store data, while SSDs utilize flash memory chips, offering faster performance and greater durability. USB flash drives provide portable and convenient storage. Optical media, though less common now, store data on discs that are read by a laser. Cloud storage services also represent a form of networked storage, where data is kept on remote servers accessible via the internet. The choice of storage device depends on factors such as capacity requirements, speed, cost, and portability.
