Spannungsabfall, also known as voltage drop, refers to the reduction in electrical potential along the path of an electric current. This phenomenon occurs due to the resistance of the conductive material through which the current flows. As electrons move through a conductor, they collide with atoms, losing some of their energy in the process. This energy loss manifests as a decrease in voltage.

The magnitude of the voltage drop is directly proportional to the current flowing through the conductor and the resistance of the conductor, as described by Ohm's Law (V = I * R). Longer wires, thinner wires, and materials with higher resistivity will exhibit greater voltage drops for the same current.

Voltage drops are a common consideration in electrical engineering and circuit design. In power transmission lines, significant voltage drops can occur over long distances, necessitating voltage regulation techniques. In electronic circuits, excessive voltage drops can lead to improper component operation or circuit malfunction. Conversely, controlled voltage drops are deliberately created using resistors to limit current or create specific voltage levels. Understanding and calculating voltage drops are crucial for ensuring efficient and reliable electrical systems.
