Sormenjälkitunniste, known in English as a fingerprint scanner, is a biometric device used for authentication. It works by capturing and analyzing the unique patterns of ridges and valleys present on a person's fingertip. These patterns, known as minutiae, are specific to each individual and remain consistent throughout a person's life.

There are several types of fingerprint scanners. Optical scanners use a camera to take a picture of the fingerprint, while capacitive scanners use electrical charges to map the ridges. Ultrasonic scanners employ sound waves to create a detailed 3D image.

When a user attempts to authenticate, the scanner captures their fingerprint and compares it to a stored template. If the patterns match within a predefined threshold, access is granted. This technology is widely used in smartphones, laptops, security systems, and border control for its convenience and perceived security. However, concerns exist regarding privacy and the potential for spoofing, although advancements in scanner technology are continuously addressing these issues. The accuracy and reliability of fingerprint scanners can be affected by factors such as dirt, moisture, or cuts on the finger.
