Solvent detergent is a broad term that can refer to two distinct categories of substances. The first, and more common usage, refers to a type of cleaning product that combines the properties of solvents and detergents. These products are formulated to tackle a wide range of soils, from greasy and oily residues that require the dissolving power of solvents, to particulate matter and other types of grime that are effectively lifted and emulsified by detergents. They are often used in industrial cleaning, degreasing applications, and for removing tough stains. The specific combination of solvents and detergents used will vary depending on the intended application and the types of substances being cleaned.

The second, less common but scientifically significant usage, refers to a method used in laboratories for the inactivation of enveloped viruses. This process, often called solvent-detergent treatment, utilizes a mixture of an organic solvent (such as tri-n-butyl phosphate) and a detergent (like Triton X-100 or Tween 80). This combination disrupts the lipid envelope of enveloped viruses, rendering them non-infectious. This technique is valuable in the purification of biological products, such as blood-derived therapeutics, to ensure they are free from viral contamination. The effectiveness of solvent-detergent treatment is specific to enveloped viruses and does not affect non-enveloped viruses or other biological components.
