The primary goal of cell culture is to provide a controlled environment where cells can survive, proliferate, and express their functions.

The process begins with obtaining cells, which can be primary cells isolated directly from a tissue or established cell lines that have been adapted to continuous growth in vitro. These cells are then placed in specialized culture vessels, such as flasks or petri dishes, coated with appropriate substances to promote cell attachment and growth. The culture medium is a complex mixture of nutrients, salts, vitamins, amino acids, and growth factors essential for cell survival and replication. Sterile techniques are paramount throughout the process to prevent contamination by microorganisms, which can quickly outcompete or kill the cultured cells.

Cell cultures are maintained in incubators that precisely regulate temperature, usually around 37°C for mammalian cells, and provide a carbon dioxide atmosphere to stabilize the pH of the medium. Different types of cell culture exist, including monolayer cultures where cells grow as a single layer on a surface, and suspension cultures where cells are grown freely in the liquid medium. Cell viability and growth are regularly monitored, and cells are typically subcultured or passaged when they reach a certain density to prevent overcrowding and maintain optimal growth conditions. These methods are foundational in many biological research areas, including drug discovery, disease modeling, and fundamental cell biology studies.
