Smogforming

Smogforming refers to the atmospheric chemical processes that lead to the formation of smog. Smog, a portmanteau of smoke and fog, is a type of air pollution characterized by visible haze and reduced air quality. The primary components of smog formation are the reactions between sunlight and certain atmospheric pollutants.

These pollutants include nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). NOx are typically emitted from the combustion of fossil fuels in vehicles and industrial processes. VOCs are released from a variety of sources, including gasoline, solvents, and vegetation. When exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun, NOx breaks down, releasing oxygen atoms. These oxygen atoms then react with oxygen molecules to form ozone (O3).

Ozone is a key component of photochemical smog. It can also react with NOx and VOCs to create a cascade of secondary pollutants, such as peroxyacyl nitrates (PANs). These secondary pollutants contribute to the visible haze and can have detrimental effects on human health and the environment. The intensity of smogforming processes is often exacerbated by meteorological conditions such as temperature inversions, which trap pollutants near the ground, and stagnant air masses, which prevent dispersion. Understanding smogforming is crucial for developing strategies to mitigate air pollution and improve air quality in urban and industrial areas.
