Smearnäytteitä, often translated as smear samples or smears, are a common diagnostic tool in medicine. They involve collecting a small sample of cells or bodily fluids, which are then spread thinly onto a glass slide. This thin layer allows for microscopic examination.

The process of obtaining a smearnäyte is typically straightforward and minimally invasive. Depending on the location from which the sample is taken, this might involve using a cotton swab, a small brush, or a spatula to gently scrape or collect material. Common sites for smear collection include the cervix, the mouth, or skin lesions. Once collected, the material is carefully spread onto a clean glass slide. The slide may then be fixed, either by air-drying or by using a chemical fixative, to preserve the cells for analysis.
