Slovakization

Slovakization refers to the process of adopting Slovak language, culture, and identity. This can occur voluntarily through assimilation or be imposed through political or social pressure. Historically, Slovakization has been a response to periods of external dominance or assimilationist policies by neighboring states.

During the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Slovak cultural and linguistic development was often suppressed, leading to movements for Slovak national revival and preservation. Following the formation of Czechoslovakia after World War I, Slovakization gained momentum as a means of solidifying a distinct Slovak national identity within the new state.

In the latter half of the 20th century, particularly after the establishment of communist rule, Slovakization policies were sometimes implemented with the aim of promoting Slovak language and culture over others within the country. This could involve changes in place names, administrative language, and educational curricula.

The concept of Slovakization can also encompass individuals or communities choosing to embrace Slovak culture and language for personal or social reasons. The degree and nature of Slovakization have varied significantly throughout history and depend on specific socio-political contexts.
