SlavonicGreek, also known as Church Slavonic or Old Church Slavonic, is an East Slavic literary language that emerged in the 9th century. It is primarily associated with the Christianization of the Slavic peoples and the development of Slavic literature. The language was created by the Byzantine missionaries Saints Cyril and Methodius, who sought to provide a written form of Slavonic for religious texts, thereby avoiding the use of Latin or Greek.
