SkyDrive

SkyDrive was a cloud storage service offered by Microsoft as part of its Windows Live family. It provided online storage for files and documents, along with the ability to synchronize content across devices and access files via a web-based interface. The service supported uploading through the web, desktop clients, and mobile apps, and it enabled sharing links with others for collaboration or permissions-based access. SkyDrive was integrated with Office Web Apps (now Office Online), allowing users to view and edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents directly in a browser and have those changes reflected on connected devices.

The service was introduced in 2007 as Windows Live SkyDrive and evolved with the Windows Live ecosystem, eventually adopting the SkyDrive name as part of the broader Microsoft account experience. Over time, SkyDrive expanded its platform support with clients for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, as well as continued web access and file sharing capabilities. Features such as file version history and selective synchronization were part of the offering, enabling users to manage changes and keep specific folders in sync across devices.

In 2014, Microsoft renamed SkyDrive to OneDrive after a trademark dispute with BSkyB. The consumer service continued under the OneDrive branding, while the business-oriented SkyDrive Pro was rebranded as OneDrive for Business. The SkyDrive brand was retired, with OneDrive remaining the continuation of the service for personal and enterprise use.
