Skatteforvaltningen, the Danish Tax Administration, is the government agency responsible for the assessment and collection of taxes in Denmark. It operates within the Danish tax system and is overseen by the Ministry of Taxation. Its core mandate is to administer tax laws, ensure timely and accurate tax collection, and promote compliance while minimizing administrative burden for taxpayers.

The agency handles the processing of tax returns, calculation of liability, issuance of tax assessments, and administration of various tax types, including income tax, value-added tax (VAT), property taxes, and excise duties. It administers employer withholding, business taxation, and the handling of tax credits and deductions. It also manages debt collection and enforcement actions when payments are overdue, and it can conduct audits and inspections to detect non-compliance.

Skatteforvaltningen provides guidance and information to individuals and businesses through official channels, including the skat.dk portal, which offers digital services such as self-service for taxpayers (TastSelv) to file returns, view notices, and manage records. The agency also maintains taxpayer registries, handles appeals and corrections, and cooperates with municipal tax administrations and other national authorities. Internationally, it participates in information exchange and cooperation to combat tax evasion and to implement bilateral and multilateral tax agreements.

The overall objective is to secure revenue for public services while offering accessible, user-friendly services to taxpayers and ensuring privacy and data protection in line with applicable laws.
