Skaryna

Skaryna refers to Francysk Skaryna, a Belarusian scholar and humanist of the Renaissance. Born in Polatsk in the late 15th century, he is widely recognized as the first Belarusian printer and a key figure in the development of Belarusian literature and language. Skaryna studied at the University of Krakow and later received a doctorate in medicine from the University of Padua.

His most significant contribution was the publication of a translation of the Bible into the Old Belarusian language. Beginning in 1517 in Prague, he published his printed edition of the Psalms, followed by other books of the Old Testament. These works were groundbreaking as they were the first books printed in the East Slavic region and in the Belarusian vernacular. Skaryna's printed books utilized a Cyrillic alphabet and included detailed introductions, commentaries, and illustrations, demonstrating his scholarly erudition and his commitment to making religious texts accessible to a wider audience.

Beyond his printing achievements, Skaryna was also a physician, scientist, and diplomat. He served in various capacities, including as a doctor and advisor to the Grand Duke of Lithuania and later to the Tsar of Moscow. His intellectual pursuits and pioneering work in printing left an indelible mark on Belarusian culture and history, earning him the title of the "father of Belarusian printing." His legacy continues to be celebrated through monuments, institutions, and academic research dedicated to his life and work.
