Sjómílur
Sjómílur is the Icelandic word for nautical mile. A nautical mile is a unit of length used in maritime navigation and aviation. It is defined as exactly 1,852 meters. This unit is based on the Earth's circumference and is approximately equal to one minute of arc of latitude along any line of longitude. This relationship makes it convenient for calculations in navigation, as the distance in nautical miles corresponds directly to the angular distance traveled in minutes of latitude. Historically, the nautical mile was based on the circumference of the Earth, with one nautical mile being one minute of arc along a great circle. The international nautical mile was standardized in 1929. The term sjómílur in Icelandic directly translates to "sea mile." Distinguishing it from a land mile (landmílur), the sjómílur is specifically used for measuring distances at sea and in the air. Its consistent definition globally aids in international travel and communication between vessels and aircraft.
