Sivasteiden

Sivasteiden is a term used in some Nordic languages, notably Finnish and Swedish, to refer to small, often uninhabited islands or islets. The precise meaning can vary slightly depending on regional dialect and context, but it generally denotes a rocky outcrop or a patch of land surrounded by water that is too small to be considered a proper island or a sker. These formations are common along the extensive coastlines and archipelagos of the Nordic countries.

In Finnish, "sivasteet" (plural) can also sometimes refer to islets that are close to a larger island or the mainland, perhaps even connected at low tide or by natural bridges. In Swedish, the equivalent term "skärgård" (archipelago) encompasses these smaller features, but a more specific term like "flad" or "grund" might be used for particularly small or submerged rocks. The ecological significance of sivasteiden is notable, as they often serve as breeding grounds for seabirds and resting places for seals, despite their limited size.
