Sisätiheydellä refers to the internal density of a substance or object. This concept is distinct from overall or bulk density, which accounts for voids or inter-particle spaces. Internal density specifically measures the mass per unit volume of the material itself, excluding any empty spaces within its structure.

For example, when considering a porous material like a sponge, its bulk density would be low because of the significant amount of air trapped within its pores. However, the internal density of the sponge material itself, if you were to measure the density of just the solid strands that make up the sponge, would be considerably higher. Similarly, in granular materials like sand or powders, bulk density includes the air pockets between grains, while internal density refers to the density of the individual sand grains or powder particles.

Understanding internal density is crucial in various scientific and engineering fields. In materials science, it can help characterize the fundamental properties of a substance, influencing its strength, thermal conductivity, and optical behavior. In fields like metallurgy or ceramics, the internal density of the solid phase is a key parameter for processing and performance.
