Sisekõrvapõletik

Sisekõrvapõletik, also known as labyrinthitis, is an inflammation of the labyrinth, which is the inner ear. The labyrinth is a complex structure responsible for both hearing and balance. When it becomes inflamed, it can disrupt these functions, leading to a variety of symptoms.

The most common cause of sisekõrvapõletik is a viral infection, often a respiratory virus like the common cold or flu. In some cases, bacterial infections can also be the culprit, though this is less frequent. Other potential causes include certain medications, head injuries, or autoimmune disorders.

Symptoms typically appear suddenly and can be quite severe. The hallmark symptom is vertigo, a sensation of spinning or dizziness, which can be intense and disabling. This can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Hearing loss, usually in the affected ear, is another common symptom. Patients may also experience tinnitus, which is a ringing or buzzing sound in the ear.

Diagnosis is usually based on the patient's reported symptoms and a physical examination. In some instances, hearing tests or balance assessments may be performed to evaluate the extent of the inner ear's dysfunction.

Treatment for sisekõrvapõletik focuses on managing the symptoms and addressing the underlying cause. For viral infections, treatment is often supportive, aiming to relieve symptoms with medications for nausea, dizziness, and pain. Antibiotics are prescribed if a bacterial infection is identified. In cases of severe vertigo, short-term use of anti-vertigo medications might be recommended. Most individuals recover fully, although some may experience persistent dizziness or hearing issues.
