Sisältösanoille, often translated as content words, are the words in a language that carry the primary meaning of a sentence. These words are essential for conveying information and understanding the core message of a communication. In English linguistics, content words are typically categorized as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.

Nouns represent people, places, things, or ideas. For example, in the sentence "The dog barked loudly," "dog" is a noun. Verbs express actions or states of being, such as "barked" in the same sentence. Adjectives describe nouns, like "big" in "a big house," and adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, as in "very quickly."

In contrast to content words are function words, also known as grammatical words or structure words. These include prepositions, conjunctions, articles, and pronouns. Function words provide the grammatical structure and connections between content words, but they carry little inherent meaning on their own. For instance, in the phrase "on the table," "on" and "the" are function words, while "table" is a content word.

The distinction between content and function words is fundamental to understanding sentence structure and meaning in many languages. It helps explain why we can often grasp the gist of a sentence even if some function words are missing, but the removal of content words renders the sentence largely unintelligible. This concept is relevant in fields like linguistics, natural language processing, and foreign language learning.
