Singlelexemes

Singlelexemes are a linguistic concept referring to words that have a single, indivisible semantic meaning. This means the meaning of the word cannot be broken down into smaller, independent meaningful units. For example, the word "table" is a singlelexeme. Its meaning is not derived from combining the meanings of "tab" and "le," nor can it be easily decomposed into constituent morphemes that retain independent significance in this context.

In contrast, many words are not singlelexemes. These are often compound words or words with affixes, where the meaning is a combination of smaller parts. For instance, "blackboard" is a compound word whose meaning is understood by combining the meanings of "black" and "board." Similarly, "unbreakable" is composed of the prefix "un-", the root "break," and the suffix "-able," each contributing to the overall meaning.

The concept of singlelexemes is important in lexical semantics and morphology. It helps linguists understand the fundamental building blocks of language and how meaning is constructed. While seemingly straightforward, identifying true singlelexemes can sometimes be complex, as the perceived indivisibility of meaning can be influenced by diachronic changes in language and the conventions of a specific linguistic community.
