SilikonölTamponade
SilikonölTamponade refers to the use of silicone oil as a tamponade in ophthalmology. This medical procedure involves injecting silicone oil into the vitreous cavity of the eye. The primary purpose of this silicone oil tamponade is to provide internal support to the retina, holding it in place against the choroid. This is particularly useful in complex retinal detachment cases where other tamponade agents might be less effective or prone to earlier re-detachment. It is often employed in situations such as proliferative vitreoretinopathy, giant retinal tears, or after trauma. The density of silicone oil helps to exert a consistent outward pressure, aiding in retinal reattachment and preventing further fluid accumulation. While silicone oil offers long-term tamponade, it is a foreign body and can lead to complications such as elevated intraocular pressure, emulsification of the oil, or the formation of cataracts. Removal of the silicone oil is typically a separate surgical procedure performed when the retina is deemed stable. The decision to use silicone oil tamponade is made by a surgeon based on the specific characteristics of the retinal detachment and the patient's overall eye health.
