Silikonierte

Silikonierte is an adjective used in German to describe objects, surfaces, or materials that have been coated, impregnated, or treated with silicone or silicone-based substances. The term is derived from Silikon and the suffix -ierte, indicating a performed treatment, such as silikonieren (to silicone-coat).

The silicone treatment may occur by applying silicone oil, silicone elastomer, or silicone-containing emulsions through dipping, padding, spray coating, or vapor deposition, followed by curing or drying. The resulting coating typically exhibits low surface energy, lubricity, thermal stability, and chemical resistance. Consequently silikonierte surfaces can show reduced friction, improved release properties, water repellency, and sometimes a soft hand in textiles.

Common application areas include textiles (softening and water repellency), paper and packaging (creased resistance and release properties in liners and food-grade papers), rubber and plastics processing (mold release), and various industrial components where lubrication and barrier properties are desirable. In some contexts silikonierte films or papers serve as release layers for coatings or adhesives.

Limitations and considerations: silicone coatings may migrate under certain conditions, can affect bonding, painting, and recycling streams, and must be chosen to be compatible with the substrate and end-use (including considerations for food contact and optical or electrical properties). The term remains a generic descriptor and does not imply a single standardized specification; specific properties depend on the type of silicone compound, the application method, and curing conditions.
