Silikaattiverkosto refers to the interconnected structure formed by silicon and oxygen atoms in silicate minerals. These minerals, which constitute the vast majority of the Earth's crust, are characterized by the fundamental building block known as the silica tetrahedron. Each tetrahedron consists of a central silicon atom bonded to four oxygen atoms, forming a pyramid-like shape. The way these tetrahedra link together, sharing oxygen atoms, determines the overall structure and properties of the silicate mineral.

There are several common types of silikaattiverkosto, each with distinct arrangements. In nesosilicates, the tetrahedra are isolated and linked by interstitial cations. Sorosilicates feature pairs of tetrahedra sharing one oxygen atom. Phyllosilicates are characterized by sheet-like structures where tetrahedra share three oxygen atoms. Tectosilicates, also known as framework silicates, exhibit a three-dimensional network where each tetrahedron shares all four oxygen atoms with neighboring tetrahedra, resulting in the strongest and most silica-rich structures.
