Silbensegment
Silbensegment is a theoretical unit in phonology used to describe the basic building block of a syllable. The term, drawing on the German root for syllable, designates the smallest unit within a syllable that preserves its identity across phonological processes. In many analyses, a silbensegment corresponds to an onset consonant, a syllabic nucleus (usually a vowel), or a coda consonant; languages with complex onsets or codas may subdivide these regions into multiple silbensegments, while simpler syllables may map one-to-one with a single silbensegment per region.
A syllable, therefore, can be described as a sequence of silbensegments: onset silbensegments, followed by a
Applications and usage: Silbensegments are used in linguistic description, cross-linguistic comparison, and computational annotation of syllables.
Notes: Silbensegment is a theoretical construct and is not universally adopted; different traditions may use related
