Silaanikytkentäaineet, also known as silane coupling agents, are a class of chemical compounds used to promote adhesion between inorganic and organic materials. They typically possess a dual functionality, with one part of the molecule designed to react with an inorganic surface and the other part designed to react with an organic polymer. This unique structure allows them to bridge the interface between dissimilar materials that would otherwise have poor compatibility.

The inorganic-reactive end of a silane coupling agent is usually an alkoxy or chloro group, which can hydrolyze to form silanol groups. These silanol groups can then condense with hydroxyl groups present on the surface of inorganic fillers or substrates, such as glass, silica, or metals, forming strong covalent bonds. The organic-reactive end can vary widely and might include functional groups like amines, epoxies, vinyls, or methacrylates. These groups are chosen to be compatible with the specific organic polymer being used, allowing for chemical or physical interaction and entanglement.

By forming a durable chemical bridge, silane coupling agents significantly improve the mechanical properties of composite materials, such as tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact resistance. They also enhance other performance characteristics like moisture resistance, electrical insulation, and thermal stability. Their application is widespread in industries such as coatings, adhesives, sealants, plastics, rubber, and electronics, where they play a crucial role in optimizing the performance and durability of various products.
