Sikyongs

The Sikyong is the political leader of the Tibetan government-in-exile, also known as the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA). The term "Sikyong" translates to "political leader" in the Tibetan language. The position was established in 2011, replacing the previous title of Kalon Tripa, which meant "Prime Minister." The Sikyong is directly elected by Tibetans living in exile worldwide.

The role of the Sikyong is to represent the Tibetan people, advocate for their rights and autonomy within the People's Republic of China, and oversee the administration of the CTA. This includes managing departments responsible for education, health, culture, and international relations for the Tibetan diaspora. The Sikyong works in conjunction with the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile and the Kashag, which is the executive body of the CTA.

The election process for Sikyong involves nominations from Tibetan communities and then a general election. The term of office for a Sikyong is typically five years, and they can serve a maximum of two consecutive terms. The current Sikyong is Penpa Tsering, who assumed office in 2021. The Sikyong plays a crucial role in maintaining Tibetan identity and pursuing the long-term aspirations of the Tibetan people in the international arena.
