Signaalitöötlöintiä, or signal processing in English, is a broad field of engineering and mathematics that deals with the analysis, modification, and synthesis of signals. A signal is a function that conveys information about the state or behavior of a physical system. Examples include audio signals, images, video, and sensor data. The primary goal of signal processing is to extract useful information from signals, enhance their quality, or transform them into a more convenient form for storage, transmission, or further analysis.

The field can be broadly categorized into two main areas: analog signal processing and digital signal processing. Analog signal processing manipulates continuous-time signals using physical components like resistors, capacitors, and operational amplifiers. Digital signal processing, on the other hand, operates on discrete-time signals that have been sampled and quantized. This approach, enabled by the advent of digital computers and specialized hardware like Digital Signal Processors (DSPs), offers greater flexibility, precision, and the ability to implement complex algorithms.

Key techniques in signal processing include filtering, which aims to remove unwanted components or emphasize specific frequencies; spectral analysis, used to understand the frequency content of a signal; modulation and demodulation, essential for transmitting signals efficiently; and compression, which reduces the amount of data needed to represent a signal. Signal processing finds applications in a vast array of technologies, including telecommunications, audio and video recording, medical imaging, radar systems, seismology, and control systems. Its ongoing development continues to drive innovation in many scientific and technological domains.
