Sidescattering

Sidescattering is a phenomenon observed in optics and acoustics where waves that are incident on an object are scattered in directions perpendicular to the incident direction. This contrasts with forward scattering, where the waves are scattered in the general direction of propagation, or backscattering, where they are scattered in the opposite direction.

The characteristics of sidescattering depend on the size and shape of the object relative to the wavelength of the incident wave. For objects much smaller than the wavelength, Rayleigh scattering is a dominant effect, and sidescattering is typically less pronounced than forward or backscattering. As the object's size approaches or exceeds the wavelength, more complex scattering patterns emerge, and sidescattering can become significant.

In light scattering, sidescattering is relevant in phenomena such as the polarization of light by atmospheric particles. In acoustics, it can occur when sound waves encounter obstacles, influencing sound propagation in environments like concert halls or urban areas. Understanding sidescattering is crucial for accurately modeling wave interactions with matter and for applications in remote sensing, imaging, and communication systems. Researchers study sidescattering using theoretical models and experimental measurements to predict and control wave behavior.
