Sidegas

Sidegas is a term used in the context of internal combustion engines to describe a type of exhaust gas leakage. This leakage occurs when exhaust gases escape from the combustion chamber before they are fully expelled through the normal exhaust system. It can happen due to issues with the engine's valve seals, piston rings, or head gasket. When sidegas is present, it can lead to several undesirable effects.

The escape of unburnt or partially burnt fuel can reduce engine efficiency and power output. This is because the intended combustion process is compromised, and valuable energy is lost. Additionally, sidegas can contribute to increased emissions of unburnt hydrocarbons. The presence of hot exhaust gases escaping in unintended areas can also lead to overheating of engine components not designed to withstand such temperatures. This can accelerate wear and potentially cause damage over time. Diagnosing sidegas often involves listening for unusual noises like hissing or puffing sounds, or observing a decrease in engine performance. Repair typically involves addressing the root cause of the leak, which might mean replacing worn valve components, piston rings, or a faulty head gasket.
