Shughnis

Shughnis, also known as Shughni, is an Indo-European language spoken by the Shughni people, an ethnic group primarily residing in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast of Tajikistan. It belongs to the Eastern Iranian branch of the Indo-European family, specifically the Pamir subgroup. The Shughni language has its own unique script, known as the Shughni alphabet, which is derived from the Arabic script. This script includes additional letters to represent sounds specific to the Shughni language.

The Shughni people have a rich cultural heritage, and their language plays a significant role in preserving their traditions, folklore, and historical narratives. The language is spoken by approximately 100,000 people, with a significant number of speakers residing in the Pamir Mountains region. Shughnis is also spoken in parts of Afghanistan, particularly in the Badakhshan Province, where the Shughni people have historically migrated and settled.

The Shughni language has several dialects, reflecting the diverse linguistic landscape of the Pamir region. These dialects include the Shughni proper, Rushani, and Bartangi.
