Shtrihet

Shtrihet is an Albanian verb with two core uses. In its literal sense it means to stretch, extend, or spread something, and it can apply to physical actions (to stretch a rope), to the extension of space or distance (a road that stretches across a valley), or to broader, figurative extension such as influence or possibilities.

In its reflexive sense, shtrihet means to lie down. It is used with the subject performing the action on itself and is common in expressions describing someone reclining or resting, for example in phrases that indicate someone lying down to sleep or rest.

The form shtrihet is a present-tense form used with third-person singular subjects. The verb belongs to the shtrij family and shares a semantic field with related verbs that describe stretching, spreading, or expanding. Like other Albanian verbs, it has non-reflexive and reflexive variants that appear in different tenses and moods.

Usage notes: When used transitively, shtrihet requires a direct object or a phrase indicating what is being stretched or extended. In the reflexive sense, it conveys an action performed by the subject on itself, typically accompanied by a location or object such as a bed or surface in expressions describing lying down.
