Shotgun metagenomics is a powerful molecular sequencing technique used to study the genetic material of microbial communities directly from environmental samples. Unlike targeted sequencing methods that focus on specific genes, shotgun metagenomics involves randomly fragmenting all the DNA present in a sample and sequencing these fragments. The process begins with collecting a sample, such as soil, water, or a gut biopsy. DNA is extracted from the entire microbial community within the sample. This extracted DNA is then broken into smaller, random pieces, or "shotgunned." These fragments are then sequenced using high-throughput sequencing technologies. The resulting short DNA reads are computationally assembled and annotated to identify the organisms present and their genes. This assembly process can be challenging due to the sheer volume of data and the fragmented nature of the reads.
