Shanghais

Shanghais refers to residents of Shanghai, China, in English usage, though the standard demonym is Shanghainese. The term Shanghais is encountered mainly in historical, literary, or informal contexts. The Shanghai dialect, Shanghainese, is part of the Wu Chinese language family and coexists with Mandarin in daily life.

Shanghai is a direct-administered municipality of the People's Republic of China, located on the eastern coast at the Yangtze River Delta. It has a long history as a port and trading city; it expanded rapidly in the 19th and 20th centuries under foreign concessions and is now a global financial center. The city proper has a population of around 24 million, with the wider metropolitan area containing tens of millions.

Shanghais as residents are associated with a cosmopolitan culture shaped by trade, migration, and foreign influence. The city is known for landmarks such as the Bund and the Pudong skyline, as well as a culinary tradition that includes Shanghai cuisine with sweet and salty flavors and staples like xiaolongbao.
