SetTokenInformation

SetTokenInformation is a Windows API function that allows a process to modify certain attributes of an access token. Access tokens are security objects that represent the security context of a logged-on user or a process. They contain information such as the user's security identifier (SID), group memberships, privileges, and the integrity level.

The SetTokenInformation function takes a handle to an access token, a TOKEN_INFORMATION_CLASS value specifying the type of information to set, a pointer to the buffer containing the new information, and the size of the buffer. By using this function, a process can, for example, enable or disable specific privileges associated with a token, change the token's source information, or set the token's primary group. It is important to note that modifying certain aspects of an access token can have significant security implications and requires appropriate privileges. For instance, to modify a token, the calling process typically needs the SE_SECURITY_NAME privilege. The function returns TRUE if the operation is successful and FALSE otherwise. Error information can be retrieved using GetLastError. This function is primarily used by system processes and security-aware applications that need fine-grained control over security contexts.
