Sensitivierende

Sensitivierende refers to the process by which a substance or stimulus causes an increased or exaggerated response in an organism over time. This phenomenon is often observed in biological and immunological contexts. In immunology, for example, repeated exposure to an allergen can lead to sensitization, where the immune system becomes hypersensitive to that substance. Subsequent exposures, even at low doses, can then trigger a strong allergic reaction. This involves the activation of specific immune cells and the release of inflammatory mediators.

The concept of sensitizing can also apply to other systems. In toxicology, for instance, certain chemicals can sensitize tissues, making them more vulnerable to damage from subsequent exposures. Similarly, in behavioral science, repeated exposure to certain stimuli can lead to a heightened emotional or physiological response, a form of behavioral sensitization.
