It refers to a hypothetical mechanism by which stable meaning is maintained even as sensory channels change due to lighting, occlusion, movement, or shifts in attention. The concept is distinct from perceptual constancy, which preserves the appearance of objects; sensepermanent focuses on the continuity of interpretive content or the "sense" of a scene over time and across modalities.

In theoretical accounts, sensepermanent describes representations or processes that bind sensory signals into a stable frame of reference. Proponents link it to predictive coding, sensorimotor integration, and semantic memory, suggesting that the brain or an artificial system can retain a coherent sense of environment despite noisy or partial data. In artificial intelligence and robotics, sensepermanent-inspired approaches aim to maintain stable scene understanding as inputs evolve, improving navigation and interaction.

Criticism notes that sensepermanent overlaps with existing ideas such as perceptual memory, scene understanding, and context maintenance, and that the term lacks a precise, widely accepted definition. Nevertheless, it has found use in speculative discussions, design thought experiments, and some discussions of human–computer interaction and virtual reality, where persistent interpretation of sensory input is valuable.
