Sennozidit

Sennozidit is a term that refers to the active compounds found in senna. Senna is a plant, or more specifically, the dried leaves, petioles, and fruit pods of plants belonging to the genus *Senna*. These compounds are known as anthraquinones, and among them, the sennosides are the most pharmacologically significant. Sennozidit acts as a stimulant laxative.

The mechanism of action for sennozidit involves the stimulation of peristalsis in the colon. After ingestion, sennozidit is metabolized in the large intestine by bacteria into active compounds, primarily rhein anthrones. These metabolites irritate the colonic mucosa, which in turn increases the muscle contractions of the intestinal wall, leading to a faster transit of intestinal contents. Additionally, sennozidit can inhibit the absorption of water and electrolytes from the colon, resulting in increased water content and volume of the stool, which facilitates bowel movement.

Sennozidit is commonly used for the short-term treatment of constipation. It is available in various over-the-counter preparations, including tablets, capsules, and teas. Due to its potent laxative effect, it is generally recommended for occasional use and not for chronic constipation. Prolonged or excessive use of sennozidit can lead to electrolyte imbalances, particularly hypokalemia, and may cause dependence on laxatives for bowel function. It is important to follow dosage instructions and consult a healthcare professional if constipation persists or if experiencing adverse effects.
