Semnat

Semnat is a Romanian word that functions as an adjective and the past participle of the verb a semna, meaning to sign. It is used to describe a document, inscription, or other item that has been signed or endorsed by a person or authority.

Etymology and usage: Semnat derives from semn, meaning sign, which in turn comes from the Latin signum. As a participle, semnat can also act as an adjective and agrees with the noun it modifies in gender and number (for example, documentul semnat, hotărârea semnată). In formal and administrative language, the term appears in contexts such as contracts, certificates, letters, and decrees to indicate that a signature has been affixed and that the document has received formal authorization.

In practice, semnat is often contrasted with related terms such as semnătură (signature) and a semna (to sign). While semnat describes the state of having been signed, semnătură refers to the actual act of signing or the written signature itself. Semnat can also appear in phrases describing the validity of a document, for instance indicating that it is semnat by the authorized party, or that it bears a legally binding semnător.
