Semmi

Semmi is a word that appears in several languages and should not be confused across contexts. In Finnish, semmi is an informal, slang term meaning nothing or of little consequence. It is common in casual speech and online communication, where it functions to indicate absence, non-importance, or a dismissive stance. As a nonstandard register, semmi is more typical in spoken Finnish than in formal writing.

In Hungarian, semmi is the standard noun for nothing and is widely used in everyday speech. It appears in common phrases to express absence or negation, and is a familiar building block in casual conversation. Although the two uses share the same spelling, they developed independently in their respective languages.

Outside these languages, semmi does not have a widely recognized meaning and may appear only as a loanword, transcription, or proper name in obscure contexts. There is no single canonical definition of semmi beyond its usage in Finnish and Hungarian.
