Semibalanus
Semibalanus is a genus of acorn barnacles, sessile crustaceans in the family Balanidae. Members occur on open coastlines and estuaries in temperate to subtropical regions, attaching permanently to hard substrates such as rocks, piers, and shells. The genus is part of the intertidal barnacle community and shares the characteristic conical capitulum formed by calcareous plates.
Individuals are filter feeders, extending feather-like cirri to capture plankton as water moves with the tides.
Reproduction is sexually based; many Semibalanus are hermaphroditic and possess a long penis for cross-fertilization with
Taxonomically, Semibalanus distinguishes itself from related barnacle genera by combinations of carinal and lateral shell plate
