Semantilennud

Semantilennud is a concept used in Estonian-language discussions of semantic networks and knowledge representation. It describes the process or phenomenon of tracing and utilizing semantic connections between concepts within a graph-like structure, enabling inference, navigation, and explanation. The term is a compound of semantic and lennud (flights/paths), metaphorically illustrating trips along semantic relationships.

In practice, semantilennud involve nodes (concepts) and edges (relations) such as synonymy, hypernymy, part-of, causation, and functional relationships. Weighted edges and probabilistic traversals allow systems to rank paths by relevance or plausibility. Common techniques include random walks, pathfinding, and learning-based scoring to identify meaningful semantic routes between query concepts.

Applications include knowledge graphs for search and recommendation, natural language understanding, information extraction, and educational tools that show connections between ideas.

Advantages include intuitive visualization and explainability by showing concrete paths; they are scalable to large graphs with efficient indexing. Limitations include dependence on data quality, potential ambiguity or noise in edges, and increasing computational cost as graph size grows.

Example: in a biomedical knowledge graph, a semantilennud path might link aspirin to analgesic to pain relief to inflammation to support a query about drug actions and medical conditions.
