Selfsterilizing refers to the ability of a material or surface to reduce or eliminate the presence of microorganisms on its own, without external intervention. This is typically achieved through the incorporation of antimicrobial agents or by designing the material's properties to inherently inhibit microbial growth.

One common approach involves embedding antimicrobial substances within the material matrix. These substances can be released over time, creating an environment that is toxic or disruptive to microbes. Examples include the use of silver ions, quaternary ammonium compounds, or natural antimicrobial compounds. The effectiveness and longevity of selfsterilizing properties depend on the concentration of the antimicrobial agent, its rate of release, and the specific types of microorganisms it targets.
