Sejtfelszínhez, also known as cell surface, refers to the outermost boundary of an animal cell, or the layer just inside the cell wall of a plant, fungal, or bacterial cell. This dynamic interface plays a critical role in cellular function, mediating interactions between the cell and its environment.

The cell surface is composed primarily of a lipid bilayer, which forms a semi-permeable barrier. Embedded within and attached to this bilayer are various proteins, collectively known as membrane proteins. These proteins perform a multitude of tasks, including acting as receptors for signaling molecules, transporting nutrients and waste products across the membrane, and participating in cell-cell recognition. Carbohydrate chains are often attached to these proteins and lipids, forming a glycocalyx on the outer surface, which is involved in cell adhesion and protection.

The cell surface is essential for maintaining cellular integrity, regulating the passage of substances, and enabling communication with other cells and the external environment. It is involved in processes such as endocytosis and exocytosis, where the cell engulfs or expels substances, and in immune responses, where the cell surface markers are recognized by immune cells. The precise composition and organization of the cell surface are tightly regulated and can vary significantly between different cell types and organisms.
