Sedimentáris

Sedimentáris is a term used in geology to describe rocks that are formed from the accumulation and cementation of sediment. Sediment itself is composed of small particles of pre-existing rocks, minerals, or organic matter that have been transported and deposited by agents like water, wind, or ice. Over vast periods of time, these deposited layers are subjected to pressure from overlying sediments and dissolved minerals in groundwater, leading to compaction and cementation, a process known as lithification. This transforms the loose sediment into solid rock.

There are three main categories of sedimentary rocks: clastic, chemical, and organic. Clastic sedimentary rocks, such as sandstone and shale, are formed from fragments of other rocks. Chemical sedimentary rocks, like rock salt and limestone, precipitate directly from solutions. Organic sedimentary rocks, such as coal, are formed from the accumulation of organic debris.

Sedimentary rocks are significant because they often preserve evidence of past environments, including fossils, which are remnants or traces of ancient life. They are also a source of important natural resources, including fossil fuels, minerals, and groundwater. The study of sedimentary rocks provides crucial insights into Earth's history and processes.
