Secicidir

Secicidir, also known as Secicidaris, is a genus of sea urchins belonging to the family Cidaridae. These marine invertebrates are characterized by their distinctive, flattened test or shell, which is typically heart-shaped or oval in outline. Secicidir species are found in the Atlantic Ocean, with a particular concentration in the Caribbean Sea. They inhabit a variety of substrates, including coral reefs, rocky outcrops, and sandy bottoms, at depths ranging from the intertidal zone to about 100 meters.

The genus Secicidir includes several species, with the most well-known being Secicidaris secicida. This species is notable for its large size, with a test diameter that can reach up to 15 centimeters. Secicidaris secicida is a filter feeder, using its tube feet to draw in water and extract food particles. It plays an important role in the ecosystem by contributing to nutrient cycling and serving as a food source for various marine organisms.
