Scoringkansen

Scoringkansen are opportunities in football where a player or team has a realistic chance to score. They arise from build-up play that creates a shot with a meaningful probability of finding the net, such as a shot from inside the penalty area, a one-on-one situation, or a well-placed cross that leads to a high-quality finish. They are distinct from a mere shot, as many attempts are low quality and do not count as scoringkansen.

Measurement and data: Scoringkansen are identified from event data and video analysis. Analysts assess factors such as shot location, goal-mouth pressure, defender distance, assist type, and time on the ball. Some data sets label “big chances” or high-quality chances, representing opportunities with higher probability of scoring. Metrics such as expected goals (xG) quantify the likelihood that a given scoringkansen would have become a goal, aggregating across shots to yield a team's scoring efficiency.

Applications: They help assess offensive efficiency, compare teams or players, and guide tactical decisions, such as where to direct attacking play or how to adapt after losing possession.
