Schwartzman may refer to several things. In the context of biology, the Schwartzman reaction is a classic example of a localized Shwartzman reaction, a severe inflammatory response that occurs in animals when they are injected with bacterial endotoxins. A generalized Shwartzman reaction, conversely, can be fatal. It is a model for understanding the pathogenesis of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), a condition where blood clots form throughout the body.
